How to commission a painting

I love working on commissions, so if you are interested please do get in touch!

The first stage is a meeting to talk about what you would like; the size, colours, where it fits into your home and the subject matter.

We then look at some of my others paintings and you choose the aspects you like, particular marks, effects or colour combinations or just a feeling. We make sure at this point that I have a good idea exactly you want from the painting.

If there is a particular area or view that is special to you I go there and sketch, showing you some composition ideas before starting painting. As the painting progresses you get photos several times to check you are still happy, then when I'm nearly finished, an invitation to the studio to see the painting in real life. Any changes are then discussed and completed.

Then you are the proud owner of a piece of art made especially for you!

Further details

I can work to commission based on an idea, an atmosphere, a general landscape or a particular area. If it's an area that is special to you this means me visiting to sketch and take in the atmosphere at the time of year or weather conditions you would choose so that the painting has the atmosphere you are looking for. This means it needs to be reasonably local... in the UK. Obviously the work is in my style, I show you the sketches made, we discuss which you choose and then I send you updates of the painting in progress.

Commissions are charged by size, there is an initial non-returnable deposit of 25% which covers my time and costs for materials and maybe travelling and sketching. Once the sketches have been agreed upon and the final painting started I take a further 25%, the next 25% is taken during the painting process after I have shown you photos of the painting and we have agreed any changes and the final 25% is paid at the studio visit to see it in real life, just before delivery or collection. Having made the decision to commission a painting and me having kept you in touch with its developments hopefully there will be no issues, if you decide not to proceed at any point all money will be refunded apart from the initial 25%.

'We loved Penny’s style and commissioned her to paint a large landscape. We talked through the brief, and liaised afterwards culminating in a really beautiful painting. Penny was a delight to deal with.'

'It’s arrived safely and we have just opened it together.  It is wonderful and we are so thrilled with it.  We can now see the richness of the tones and the textured mark making which really makes it breathe!  It is indeed our previous walk and I can almost feel the relief I get when I reach the fir trees on my run before turning back!

Thank you so much, it will indeed give us many years of pleasure!'
