Oil and cold wax landscape painting workshops, using pigments you make yourself

Spend some time developing your creativity, exploring different techniques for drawing and painting and experimenting with pigments, paints and cold wax in a relaxing, supportive environment.
Workshops are open to all abilities, being small groups only they are individually tailored to ability, we won't be using paintbrushes so you can pack your painting pre-conceptions away (whether good or bad!) and come and experiment! As well as creating my own work I've taught art for over 30 years in schools, colleges and adult education settings. These workshops take place in a warm light filled room with beautiful views in the village pavilion in Horton in Ribblesdale, near Settle, where we can take advantage of the views and the surrounding beautiful Yorkshire Dales.
This is a day spent drawing and painting, making, grinding and mixing some your own pigments to use with cold wax while creating landscape inspired paintings.
You will have the opportunity to use Wallace Seymour ancient drawing materials (stones and crushed earth pigment) to begin your drawing session and loosen you up to look for the different layers in the landscape. Weather permitting we will collect twigs and burn charcoal, which can be used for drawing and also crushed to make black oil paint you will use in your work. If the weather doesn't allow for that, you will be shown how easy it is to burn your own charcoal, but we will grind some ready made. Moving on you will be shown techniques using the cold wax with your paints, developing small oil and cold wax paintings on paper. Hopefully some of the day will be spent drawing outdoors where you are more able to capture the atmosphere, but that is weather dependent...
You will be shown different application techniques and tools, building up and working back into layers, how to create different marks and textures and the use of cold wax medium and paints to create different effects in your work.
All you need to bring is your lunch, a willingness to experiment, old warm clothes, a wind/waterproof (after all it is winter/spring in the Dales!) and sensible footwear for grassy and rocky footpaths. All materials and equipment are provided. If you would prefer to keep clothes clean and want to wear an apron please bring your own, disposable gloves are provided.

Testimonials:

Penny's workshop gave me the confidence to explore new techniques and the umph I needed to play with my materials again after a period of doubting myself. Jess

Penny was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable and really helped me feel confident. We worked with different textures, building backgrounds that we were much more experimental and didn't get too fussy. It was lovely and has really inspired me to paint more! Thoroughly recommend! Poppy
I was excited by the workshop and can't wait to try out some more of the ideas. I wanted to loosen up a little in my own painting and not be quite so bound by the actual. I wanted to explore a slightly more ethereal /abstract approach and I felt that Penny addressed what I wanted and gave me ideas. Gabrielle
